Did you know that the Moon was proposed to be the 51st State of the USA? :)
In 2012, Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stated that "when we have 13,000 Americans living on the Moon, they can petition to become a state," as a way of supporting American colonization of Earth's satellite. However, under Article II of the Outer Space Treaty, the Moon and other celestial bodies are permanently considered terra nullius and cannot be claimed by any country. Additionally, under the provisions of the Northwest Ordinance, statehood requires a population of at least 60,000.
